  4. Cover with plastic wrap and let the steak marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  2. Whisk together until well combined.

Step 3: Cook the Steak

  1. Preheat your grill or grill pan over high heat.

  2. Remove the marinated steak from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling.

  3. Grill the steak for about 4-5 minutes on each side (depends on preferred doneness), brushing occasionally with canola oil until fully cooked*.

Step 4: Assemble and Serve

  1. Lay out sliced beef on a platter and pour remaining sauce on top of it or serve on a separate dish as dipping sauce.

  3. Enjoy your Vietnamese-style steak with family and friends!

*Not sure if the steak is fully cooked? Use an instant-read thermometer to check for doneness. For a medium-rare beef, the temperature should be 135 degrees Fahrenheit. For a medium-well beef, it’s around 145 – 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

It’s always handy to have a few substitutions and variations up your sleeve when you’re experimenting with recipes. This Vietnamese Style Steak Recipe is no different. Here are some ideas that can help you mix things up:

– Cut of beef: While we recommend using flank steak for this recipe, you can also use other cuts of beef such as sirloin or skirt steak. Just keep in mind that the cooking time may vary based on the thickness of the cut.

– Marinade sauce: The marinade sauce is what gives this dish its signature flavor. But if you want to switch things up, you can try using different ratios of soy sauce, fish sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, and garlic cloves. You can also try adding chili flakes or lemongrass for an extra kick.

– Salad: You don’t have to limit yourself to just one type of salad. You can make a cucumber salad or a mixed green salad with your preferred dressing. Alternatively, you could serve the marinated steak over rice as a bowl meal.

– Shaking Beef (Bò Lúc Lắc): The Vietnamese name for this recipe is Bò Lúc Lắc, which translates to “shaking beef.” The dish gets its name from the way it’s cooked – the beef is stir-fried until it shakes in the pan. You can experiment with other proteins like chicken or shrimp to make your own shaking dish.

– Banh Mi: If you’re feeling adventurous, you could turn this Vietnamese Style Steak into a Banh Mi sandwich by slicing the steak thinly and serving it on baguette bread with pickled veggies and fresh herbs.

No matter what variations or substitutions you make, remember that cooking is all about experimentation and creating dishes that suit your taste buds. So go ahead and get creative with this Vietnamese-inspired steak recipe!

1. Marinate overnight: Marinating the steak for at least a few hours is essential to allow the flavors to seep into the meat. However, for best results, keep the steak in the marinade for at least overnight.

2. Use fresh ingredients: To achieve an authentic Vietnamese flavor, use fresh ingredients such as garlic cloves, ginger paste, lime zest, and freshly ground black pepper.

3. Don’t skimp on fish sauce: The fish sauce is a crucial ingredient in Vietnamese cuisine and adds a unique umami flavor to the dish. Using good quality fish sauce is essential.

4. Don’t overcook the steak: Vietnamese-style beef should be tender and juicy, with a slightly crispy char on the outside. Avoid overcooking it, as it can become tough and chewy.

5. Let the steak rest before slicing: After grilling or pan-searing, let the steak rest for a few minutes before slicing to lock in all those savory juices.

6. Serve with nuoc cham: The classic dipping sauce made with fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, and chili peppers makes an excellent accompaniment to Vietnamese-style beef.
